How to Improve Your Health TODAY!

Feeling sluggish during this busy holiday season? You can take back control of your health, TODAY! With a few simple steps, you can start feeling better right away.

Here are a few suggestions of things you can start doing right now to feel better mentally and physically:

  • Go to bed earlier – countless studies show that a good night’s sleep is critical to good mental health. Try going to bed an hour earlier than you usually do. Can’t get your mind to slow down? Try to focus on relaxing one part of your body at a time, starting with your feet, then moving to your legs, and so on. You can also consider meditating (download an app to help with this if you are unsure where to start).
  • Focus on one thing at a time – for some of us, it is difficult to focus on what’s happening in the moment. We are always looking ahead to what is coming next. Try to focus on each activity you do as you complete it; even something as simple as taking a shower! Think about how you feel, what sensations you feel, smell, taste. This can help to calm your mind.
  • Think about (and write down!) something you are grateful for: sometimes, a brief moment of gratitude for something that’s good in your life is all it takes to snap out of a bad mood.
  • Tell yourself something positive (about you!): it is so easy to be critical of ourselves. Try to think about something that you like about yourself, or something that you have done well today. This can help boost your mood.
  • Do something for someone else: many times, helping someone else will make you feel better about yourself.
  • Exercise and eat a good meal: have you found yourself enjoying watching TV from the couch a little too much lately? Or eating too many cookies that you baked? Exercise and a healthy meal can do wonders for your mental health. Even a ten minute walk can help you relax and reset. Also, try adding an extra fruit or vegetable to your meals today.
